Tippecanoe wins MVL tennis tournament

TROY — It wasn’t easy, but Tippecanoe girls tennis team continued its streak of MVL titles Wednesday at Troy City Park and Troy High School.

Butler came into the tournament 9-0 and Tippecanoe was 8-1.

So, the Red Devils needed to win the tournament to claim the league title.

They were first with 43 points, Butler was second with 39 and Troy was third.

Tipp defeated Butler in both doubles finals and in the third singles final to seal the win.

Troy also finished third in the overall standings.

FIRST SINGLES

Troy’s Nina Short won the title at first singles, Tippecanoe’s Eleanor Spanger was second and Piqua’s Ava Owen finished ninth.

Short defeated Sidney and Fairborn by matching 8-2 scores to reach the title match, while Spangler defeated Greenville 8-0 and Butler 8-6.

In the title match, Short won 8-6.

Owen lost to Sidney 6-2, before defeating Stebbins 8-7 in the ninth-place match.

SECOND SINGLES

Tippecanoe’s Bre Kovaleski finished second, Troy’s Calista Hicks finished sixth and Piqua’s Bri Anderson finished eighth.

Kovaleski defeated Stebbins 8-1 and Fairborn 8-4 to advance to the title match, before losing 8-2 to Butler.

Hicks lost 8-5 to West Carrollton, defeated Anderson 8-0 and lost to Stebbins 9-7 in the fifth-place match.

Anderson defeated Xenia 6-2, before losing to Butler 8-1.

After losing to Hicks, she lost 8-0 to Greenville in the seventh-place match.

THIRD SINGLES

Tippecanoe’s Jillian Schroeder won, Troy’s Kimber Connors finished second and Piqua’s Bekah Cantrell finished ninth.

Schroeder defeated Stebbins and Greenville 8-4 to get to the title match, while Connors defeated West Carrollton 8-6 and defeated Butler to get to the title match.

Schroeder defeated Connors 8-5 in the title match.

Cantrell lost to Stebbins, before defeating Xenia 8-2 in the ninth-place match.

FIRST DOUBLES

Tippecanoe Mary Waibel and Amelia Wiggelshaus won the title, Troy’s Maile Romberger and Izzy Lutz finished third and Piqua’s Katelyn Szachta and Lainey Honeycutt finished ninth.

Waibel and Wiggelshaus advanced to the title match with an 8-2 win over Xenia and a 9-7 win over Romberger and Lutz. In the title match, they topped the top seed from Butler 8-4.

Romberger and Lutz defeated Sidney 8-2 before losing to Waibel and Wiggelshaus.

In the third-place match, they defeated Greenville 9-7.

Szachata and Honeycutt lost to West Carrollton 7-5, befoe defeating Stebbins in the ninth-place match.

SECOND DOUBLES

Tippecanoe’s Eve McCormick and Sydney LaBreck won, Troy’s Savannah Gibson and Allison Straughn took third and Piqua’s Lily Pierron and Lainey Smay took eighth.

McCormick and LaBreck advanced to the title match by defeating Pierron and Smay 8-1 and Fairborn 8-0.

In the title match, they defeated Butler 8-4.

Gibson and Straughn defeated Sidney 8-5, before losing to Butler 8-6.

In the third-place match, they defeated Fairborn 8-4.

Pierron and Smay defeated West Carrollton 8-3, before losing to McCormick and LaBreck.

In the seventh-place match they lost to Sidney.
