Editor’s note: This is a two-part column from Gloria chronicling and celebrating the adoption of Jesse, age 3, and Hosanna, 4.

Take a moment to get the picture: it’s Wednesday evening of the big day — the final adoption of our precious foster children. Hosanna, age 4, flitting here and there through the group of family and friends, gathering for the celebration party at Daniel’s shop. I took a moment to observe her holding Julia’s hand, both wearing their new lavender dresses. Yes, they are sisters forever. Then there was Jesse, age 3, in a lavender shirt and blue pants, matching Elijah, who is only four months younger. The most awaited day has come. As of this morning, we are a forever family.

Everyone arrived at our small, white country schoolhouse. It was a day when everyone gathered to celebrate another successful school year. We had taken very few days off throughout the term, so school was letting out early for the year. Children played happily on the playground, and smiles were as common as the cheery yellow dandelions on the lawn.

Ahh-h-h, April! Sweet, sweet April!

It’s easy to find reasons to complain about the government these days. Well, it never has been all that difficult, but in the past year, complaining has become especially fashionable.

The children have been waiting for weeks, 21 days, to be exact.

Editor’s note: Gloria is taking the week off this week to celebrate the official adoption of her foster children into the Yoder family. This week we are re-running classic ham and cheese soup, perfect for using leftover Easter ham.
