TROY—The Miami County Commissioners awarded a one-time contribution of $257,392.71 to the Miami County Land Reutilization Corporation (aka CIC) during their meeting on Thursday, Aug. 15.

The economic development and funding contribution will provide childcare centers of communities impacted within Miami County, to assist workers with children to obtain gainful employment by providing increased opportunities for childcare, and the provision of funding to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kelly Fackel, director of development for Miami County, talked to the commissioners during the meeting.

“This allocation will go to support childcare funding,” Fackel said. “We have three projects in the pipeline to award allocations. There is a project in Milton Union, an early childcare center; a Tipp City preschool learning center; and a Troy kids preschool.”

At their meeting on Dec. 28, 2023, the commissioners authorized and signed an agreement with Comprehensive Community Child Care Organization Inc., also known as 4C and is governed by the U.S. Treasury guidance concerning American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocations. That agreement extended the terms of the agreement from Dec. 31, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2026.

“These are the funds that were given back to us through the 4C contract and now we can be a direct conduit to these organizations,” Commissioner Wade Westfall said.

The commissioners also awarded a contract for $70,904 to Performance Site Development LLC, of Fairborn, for the completion of the Village of Potsdam West Cross Street Sidewalk Improvements Project. The project was requested by the Miami County Department of Development.

Dan Suerdieck, manager of planning and zoning for the Miami County, talked to the commissioners about the project.

“The Village’s Project Engineer has reviewed bids, checked references, and recommends that we go with Performance out of Fairborn,” Suerdieck said.

In other business, the commissioners accepted a quote from Premier Safety & Services of Dayton authorizing the Emergency Management Agency to purchase four level A Hazmat suits to be used by the County Hazmat Response Team for $13,159. The purchase is to replace the four hazmat suits used during the Abbott Nutrition incident on Aug. 9.

At the end of the meeting, Commissioner Greg Simmons acknowledged William “Lance” Ray who passed away early Thursday morning.

“We’d like for you to remember him and keep his family in our prayers,” Simmons said during the meeting.

Ray, who served the citizens of Miami County for over 30 years was the Superintendent of West Central Juvenile Detention Center for 17 years. He was also a Miami County Park District Ranger, and as a member of the Miami County Board of Elections.
