TMCPL announces upcoming Maker Lab events

TROY – Here are some events happening at the Troy-Miami County Public Library (TMCPL) Maker Lab:

A library card and signed waiver are required by participants (by a parent or guardian for minors) for entry to the Maker Lab. Pre-signed waivers can be accessed at www.tmcpl.org.

GarageBand Basics: Make Background Music

Participants will learn to use GarageBand’s library of music loops to create background music for videos or podcasts on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m. There are a limited number of devices, but each participant will get hands-on experience with the software. For teens (grades 9-12) and adults. Registration is required for this program at www.tmcpl.org/libcal. An additional session is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Make a Lego Head

Design and create a customized Lego head made completely out of cardboard on Saturday, Sept. 7 at noon. All the materials will be provided. For tweens and teens (grades 6-12). Registration is required for this program. Please reserve a spot starting two weeks before. Additional sessions are scheduled for Oct. 5 and Nov. 2 at noon.

Mind the Scrap

Build, create, and reimagine new projects from leftover supplies. Drop in between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Sept. 9 to start or continue a craft in the Maker Lab. Bring crafting material to share or swap with other attendees or use the supplies available including hot glue guns, colored pencils, sticker and banner scrap material, random fabric, wood scraps, and more! For school-aged kids and teens (grades K-12) and adults. No registration is needed for this program.

Illustrator Basics

The Maker Lab will have an introductory class to help patrons who have never used or want to explore what Adobe Illustrator can be used for on Wednesday, September 11 at noon. No experience with Illustrator is required. For teens (grades 9-12) and adults. Registration is required for this program. Please reserve a spot starting two weeks before each session. An additional session is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9 at noon.

Intro to 3D Printing

This introductory workshop will introduce the basics of 3D printing for the hobbyist and include how these technologies work, how to use them, and what services are available on Thursday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. Participants will explore the concepts of layer height, infill patterns, support structure, and much more to fast-track your journey into 3D printing. For kids and teens (grades 3-12) and adults. Registration is required. Please reserve a spot starting Sept. 5.

Podcasting Basics

Learn the basics of podcast production on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. Participants will take turns recording a brief conversation, then learn how to use GarageBand to edit their recordings together with sounds and music to create a podcast. For teens (grades 9-12) and adults. Registration is required. Call the lab at 937-703-3475 for more information.

Teens Unwound

Teens can relax and unwind on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 3:30-5 p.m. while working on a personal fiber art craft, or explore sewing, knitting, crocheting, or embroidery with the suggested crafts and supplies available. For tweens and teens (grades 6-12). No registration is needed for this program. An additional session is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24 from 3:30-5 p.m.
