Troy football rolls to 49-0 win over Greenville Friday night

TROY — It took senior running back Dakota Manson just six seconds to find the end zone against Greenville Friday night.

And that set the tone for both Manson and the Trojans in a 49-0 win over Greenville to even the season record to 1-1 and go 1-0 in the MVL.

Troy has a big game at 2-0 Vandalia-Butler Friday night.

Manson — who amassed 182 yards in the game and two touchdowns on just five touches — picked up the opening kickoff at the Troy 4-yard line and went 96 yards for the score. Cameron Stoltz’s PAT kick made it 7-0 with 11:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

After Greenville’s opening possession ended with a snap over the punter’s head, Troy had a two-play, six-yard drive handled by quarterback Aiden Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick ran five yards on the first play and ran one yard for the score. Stoltz’s kick made it 14-0 with 8:04 remaining in the opening quarter.

On Greenville’s next possession, Liam Evilsizor would send the running back into the air near the 45-yard line and Creighton Verceles stripped the ball, with Marcus Cavanaugh recovering and returning it to the Greenville 22-yard line.

Manson had an eight-yard run to set up a 14-yard TD pass from Kirkpatrick to Kayden Franklin. Stoltz’s kick made it 21-0 with 3:49 remaining in the opening quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Manson would electrify the Troy crowd by breaking several tackles before going 68 yards down the sideline for a Troy touchdown. Stolt’z PAT kick made it 28-0 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Aidan Gorman would do the same late in the first half when appeared to return a Greenville fumble 75 yards for a score. But, Troy was called for a block in the back on the return.

The Trojans would put together a 70-yard drive in a little over two minutes to score just before half and make it 35-0.

Manson had a 14-yard run on the drive.

Kirkpatrick would cap the drive with a 12-yard TD pass to Zach Ullery, who dragged a Greenville defender the last five yards into the end zone. Stoltz’s kick made it 35-0, setting up a running clock for the second half.

Asher Merritt would add a 10-yard TD run and Michael Tucker would added a 16-yard TD run. Stoltz hit both kicks to make the final 49-0.

Kirkpatrick would complete six of nine passes for 64 yards in the game and Franklin would catch four passes for 41 yards.

Manson would finish with 86 yards rushing on four carries, Tucker had 40 yards on five carries and Ethane Atkins had 36 yards on three carries.

Gorman had six tackles for the defense, whille Cam’ron Couch and Cavanaugh would have five tackles each.
