Troy football improves to 5-4 with win over Fairborn

TROY — After a slow start, Troy recovered quickly and dominated Fairborn 42-14 in MVL action Friday night.

Troy, 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the MVL, will play at Sidney — a team with the same record — to close the regular season Friday night.

On the opening kickoff, Troy failed to cover the ball and Fairborn recovered at the Trojan 32-yard line.

Two plays later, Rico Smith caught a short pass from Wesley Rohler and went down the sidelines for a 30-yard touchdown. Rohler’s PAT kick made it 7-0 with just 47 seconds gone off the clock.

But, from that point on, it was all Troy as Dakota Manson had another big game.

Manson would rush for 191 yards on just 14 carries and catch two passes for 36 yards and scored two touchdowns.

He set the tone on Troy’s third play after the kickoff, going 55 yards for a score. Cameron Stoltz’s PAT kick tied the game 7-7 with less than two minutes having gone off the game clock.

On the Trojans next drive, they put together a 10-play, 64-yard drive.

A 10-yard run by Manson on third-and-four, a 14-yard pass from Kirkpatrick to Karson York and a seven-yard run by Manson put Troy on the Fairborn 15.

Kirkpatrick found Aidan Gorman open in the right flat and Gorman sped by Fairborn defenders to the end zone. Stoltz’s kick made it 14-7 with 3:08 remaining in the opening quarter.

Troy’s next possession was a quick one.

It took just one play for Manson to explode ona 72-yard TD run.

One defender had a shot at Manson near midfield, but a straight arm left the defender on the ground and Manson racing to the end zone. Stoltz’s kick made it 21-7 with 7:17 remaining in the half.

Fairborn would anwer when Rohler found a wide-open receiver for 72 yards to the Trojans six-yard line.

Zyair Cavitt would run it in from one-yard out and Rohler’s kick cut the Troy lead to 21-14.

Troy would answere with a five-play 67 yard drive.

A Manson 22-yard run led to a 44-yard pass from Kirkpatrick to Gorman to put the ball on the Fairborn 1.

Kirkpatrick ran the ball in on the next play and Stoltz’s kick made it 28-14.

Braden Boyer would then return an interception 68 yards for a Troy score and Stoltz’s kick made it 35-14, which is the way the team’s went to the locker room.

Troy used Kirk Magic to add one final score in the fourth quarter.

On a fourth-and-three from the Fairborn 48, Kirkpatrick appeared to be trapped in the backfield for a loss. He was able to escape and went all the way to the end zone. Stoltz’s PAT kick made the final score 42-14.

Kirkpatrick was a perfect 7-for-7 passing in the game for 119 yards, with Gorman catching two passes for 59 yards.

Zach Ullery had 45 yards rushing on seven carries.

Gorman also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble.

Tobey Seifert had eight tackles, Griffin Shepherd and Gage Kawecki had seven tackles each and Tristin Murray had six tackles.

For Fairborn, Rohler was 12 of 22 passing for 164 yards.

Cameron Faircloth led the rushing attack with 48 yards on 12 carries.
