GMVWA Holiday underway

VANDALIA — Scott Kaye, Dave Friend and Tim Williams were inducted into the GMVWA Hall of Fame Monday on the first day of the GMVWA Holiday tournament.

Kaye was a long-time Piqua wrestling coach, Friend is a former Miami East wrestler, assisstant Piqua coach and longtime official and Williams is a former Piqua wrestler, Miami East school administrater and longtime official.

Covington wass in 10th place after the opening day of the tournament.

Carson Taylor (106), Michael Hagen (113) and Izaiah Sherman (175) all advanced to the semifinals.

Taylor recorded three consecutive pins over Tippecanoe’s Riley Hull, Miamisburg’s Matthew Wright, and Springboro’s Joey Franz.

Hagan advanced with consecutive pins over Versailles’ Blake Schmitmeyer, Washington Courthouse’s Talon Freeze and Vandalia-Butler’s Louden Maxwell.

Shertmanpinned Great Crossing’s Nolan Yost, earned an 18-3 technical fall over Sidney’s Wyatt Biddle, and then pinned Xenia’s Jayden Ramsey.

Jericho Quinter (120), Connor Sindelir (157) and Jensen Wagoner (190) all advanced to the second day of wrestling and will wrestle in the fifth consolation round. Jericho and Connor went 3-1, while Jensen went 2-1.

Piqua, Tippecanoe and Milton-Union all had two wrestlers advance to the second day in consolations.

For Piqua, Max Kaye (138) and Landen Martin (190) advanced.

For Tippecanoe, Sean Kelly (144) and Alex Shellhammer (175) advanced.

For Milton-Union, Andrew Collins (126) and Andrew Barker (150) advanced.

Wrestling resumed Tuesday morning.
