Troy boys hold off Piqua in MVL action

PIQUA — The Troy boys basketball team held on at the end for a 48-43 victory over Piqua Friday night in MVL action at Garbry Gymnasium.

Troy, 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the MVL, will host Greenville Tuesday.

With Butler surprising Tippecanoe, Piqua maintains a share of the MVL lead.

The Indians, 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the MVL, begins a four-game road trip at Tecumseh Saturday night.

Troy had jumped out to a 15-3 first quarter lead, but Piqua rallied to get with 20-18 at halftime and trailed 37-34 going to the fourth quarter.

Troy used second-chance points to build a six-point lead.

The Trojans scored six points on offensive rebounds and led 45-39 before Piqua’s Bryson Roberts hit a 3-pointer with 1:54 to go to make it 45-42.

Piqua had only one team foul at the time and had to foul Troy six times to send them to the line.

The Trojans missed the front end of one-and-one and Piqua got the ball back down three.

The Indians missed a shot but there was jump ball on the rebound and Piqua maintained possession.

Piqua would miss again, with Zach King grabbing the rebound.

Isaac Phillips was fouled with 34.4 seconds to go and made one of two free throws to make it 46-42.

After Troy got the ball back, Troy was fouled with 21.1 seconds to go and missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Piqua’s Dre’Sean Roberts was fouled with 13.4 seconds to go and hit one of two free throws to make it 46-43.

Davis and Charlie Walker both made one of two free throws down the stretch to provide the final margin.

In the opening quarter, Noah Davis hit two 3-pointers, Isaac Phillips scored five points and Charlie Walker added four as Troy built a big lead.

But, Piqua countered in the second quarter with Dre’Sean Roberts scoring nine points.

Ky Warner hit a 3-pointer and Dre’Sean Roberts followed with two 3-pointers to pull Piqua within 17-15, then had a steal in the final 10 seconds before half and scored at the buzzer to make it 20-18 at the break.

Prince started the third quarter with two straight baskets and Davis would make three 3-pointers in the quarter.

But, Josh Crusey would hit three 3-pointers for Piqua in the quarter and Dre’Sean Roberts scored five points in the quarter as Troy led 37-34 going to the final eight minutes.

A basket by Bryson Roberts and two free throws by Dre’Sean Roberts got Piqua within 37-35 with 6:16 to go.

But, Davis would get two baskets on putbacks and Phillips had one as Troy led by as many as eight before Piqua rallied to make it close.

Davis led Troy with 20 points.

Prince had nine points and Phillips scored eight points.

Walker pulled down five rebounds.

Dre’Sean Roberts scored 20 points and six rebounds for Piqua.

Bryson Roberts had nine points and five rebounds and Crusey scored nine points.

Quintyn Yaqub pulled down seven rebounds.

Troy was 19 of 42 from the floor for 42 percent, including six of 18 from 3-point range for 33 percent. The Trojans made four of 10 free throws for 40 percent.

Piqua was 13 of 47 from the floor for 28 percent, including seven of 13 from long range for 54 percent.

The Indians made 10 of 16 free throws for 63 percent.

Piqua won the battle of the boards 25-20 and had 11 turnovers to Troy’s 13.
