PIQUA — Piqua High School seniors Cassie and Aubree Schrubb have been together since birth.
So, why not the next four years as well for the daughters of Aaron and Liz Schrubb?
Cassie signed her letter of intent in the PHS Commons this week to run cross country and track for Barton College in Wilson, N.C. — where Aubree signed to play volleyball earlier this year.
“Aubree and I had always talked about wanting to go to the same college,” Cassie Schrubb said. “When I visited it there, I really liked the campus and my coaches. So, everything worked out.”
Cassie has been a standout on the cross country and track teams for all four years.
“I used to run in fun runs with my sister when I was younger,” she said. “So, I figured why not keep running when I got in seventh grade.”
She is a three-time qualifier for regionals in cross country.
“I think Barton is a great fit for her,” Piqua girls cross country coach Seth Fashner said. “She gets the opportunity to go to college with her sister which I think will really benefit her. It is a small school and I think she will do really well there.”
Cassie is hoping for a big senior season in track. She qualified for regionals as a freshman.
“My cross country season didn’t end the way I had hoped,” she said. “So, I am hoping for a really big season in track.”
Piqua track coach Travis Nees expects the same.
“I think she will have a big senior year,” he said. “She qualified for regionals as a freshman and we are hoping she will get back there this year. I think Barton is a great opportunity for her and she gets to go college with her sister (Aubree).”
Cassie is looking forward to the challenge of college running — and an increased distance in the cross country race.
High school is 5K and college is 6K.
“I think it is a small school and I think I will really enjoy it there,” she said. “I think I am really going to enjoy the longer distance. I look forward to the challenge and having a new group of teammates to run with.”
And spending four more years close to her twin sister.
