Edison State women finish off perfect regular season

PIQUA — The Edison State Community College women’s basketball team finished off a perfect regular season by winning two games over the weekend.

It is the first undefeated season in Lady Charger history — coming off a trip to nationals two years ago.

Edison State, 27-0 overall and 12-0 in the OCCAC, will host a NJCAA Division II, Region 12 seminal at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Edison had its biggest scare of the season Saturday, holding off Terra State 88-80, before rallying in the fourth quarter for an 86-78 win over Lakeland Sunday.

The Chargers had jumped out to a 15-0 lead on Bryant & Stratton and still had a 16-point lead going to the fourth quarter.

But, Bryant & Stratton closed within 75-71 with four minutes remaining.

Maddy Bakosh had a big 3-pointer down the stretch to help the Chargers hold on.

Kailah Johnson led the Chargers with 32 points and eight rebounds.

Allison Siefring had 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and Whitney Staggs added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Bakosh scored eight points and dished out five assists.

Audra Schaub added three steals.

On Sunday, playing without Johnson who injured her ankle late in Saturday’s game — Edison survived a long bus ride and rallied in the fourth quarter.

Lakeland took a 46-41 halftime lead and the Lakers were still up 64-60 going to the fourth quarter.

But, Edison outscored them 26-14 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

Staggs had 29 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Chargers.

Bakosh added 17 points and eight steals and Siefring had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Schaub scored seven points and Kierra Wendel had six points, five rebounds and six assists.

Rylie McIver added six points off the bench.
