PIQUA — A fire at the Piqua Evenflo plant was contained and extinguished by the building’s fire suppression sprinkler system on Sunday evening.

Miami County Communications staff received an automatic fire alarm call at 8:27 p.m, alerting them to a possible fire at the Evenflo plant on Commerce Drive.

Piqua Fire Department and Covington Fire Department responded to the scene.

Workers at the plant quickly verified that there was a fire inside the plant. All employees evacuated the structure and waited in the parking lot.

Piqua firefighters requested an aerial ladder from Troy Fire Department.

Firefighters entered the building to find the fire had been extinguished by the sprinkler system.

Captain Dustin Lacy of Piqua Fire Department said that it appears that some residual material from the manufacturing process ignited, causing some nearby “aerosol cans” to ignite. The fire then spread to a machine where the sprinkler system sensed the fire/heat and began to spray water on the area. The system quickly put the fire out before it could spread.

“It (the sprinkler system) did exactly what is is designed to do,” said Lacy.

Lacy said that had it not been for the sprinkler system, the fire could have been much worse.

The fire damage was contained to one small area around the machine.

Firefighters were on the scene for less than an hour. No damage estimate has been released and there were no injuries.
