TROY — Two Troy High School juniors, Luke Huber and Connor Moeller, are raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a non-profit organization that funds blood cancer research.
Huber and Moeller were nominated by their school to take part in this fundraiser called the Student of the Year campaign. They are competing against representatives from schools across Miami and Montgomery counties, and every dollar raised equates to one vote. The team with the most votes wins the title Student(s) of the Year.
“Cancer has affected almost everybody in some way, shape, or form. Every dollar we get donated goes directly to blood cancer research so that one less person might be affected by cancer,” said Huber.
Their original goal was to raise $20,000. So far, they have nearly surpassed that and have upped their goal to $50,000. This week, they will be holding a t-shirt sale fundraiser at Troy High School and will continue to pursue corporate donations from local businesses.
“Luke and I keep going back to the idea that everyone’s been affected by cancer one way or another,” Moeller said in a press release from Troy schools. “Cancer has been around for so long, and we’re getting closer and closer to ending cancer once and for all. We want to be a part of the generation that does end cancer. We feel like this is our way of helping out, by helping fund research that will maybe prevent another person I know personally from dying one day.”
Huber and Moeller want to thank K’s Hamburger Shop, McDonald’s, Upper Valley Hearing, and Creative Labs for their generous contributions.
