TROY — A Dayton man was arraigned on charges of involuntary manslaughter and drug trafficking on Friday in Miami County Municipal Court.
Jamell M. Carter, 28, of Dayton, is facing charges of first-degree felony involuntary manslaughter and fifth-degree felony trafficking in drugs. He entered a plea of not guilty on Friday.
The charges stem from a warrant filed on Feb. 18, and the warrant was in connection with an overdose death that occurred in December 2020.
According to the Troy Police Department, Carter was charged in connection with the death of a Troy resident when he was found deceased on Dec. 14, 2020 in an apartment on Stephenson Drive in Troy.
Chief of Police Shawn McKinney of the Troy Police Department said the victim died from a fentanyl overdose, and police believe Carter was the individual who sold the victim the drug.
McKinney explained they believe the victim may have been trying to buy a different drug, some other type of pill not as deadly as fentanyl, but the drug the victim received was fentanyl, which is a type of synthetic opioid.
“The pill that was sold to him was fentanyl,” McKinney said.
McKinney explained the length of the investigation from the time of the victim’s death to the time charges were filed against Carter was due to the time it takes to receive the Coroner’s Office reports and laboratory results, as well as the time it takes for search warrants to be approved to search devices like phones.
Carter is continuing to be held at the Miami County Jail. Carter’s total bond was set at $52,500. A preliminary hearing for Carter was scheduled for March 17.
