TROY — A Dayton man accused of involuntary manslaughter is now also facing a charge of third-degree felony tampering with evidence.
On Monday, Jamell M. Carter, 28, of Dayton, was arraigned on a charge of tampering with evidence, to which he entered a plea of not guilty. His bond for this charge was set at $50,000.
According to Miami County Municipal Court records, Carter was seen on video “snorting some type of substance” from a plastic baggie taken from his shoe while he was in the custody of Troy police on March 10. This event was not discovered at the time of the incident, and Miami County Jail staff did not report finding any contraband on Carter at the time of his incarceration. According to court reports, police will have to obtain a search warrant to access Carter’s belongings.
Last week, Carter was incarcerated after on charges of first-degree felony involuntary manslaughter and fifth-degree felony trafficking in drugs in connection with the death of a 29-year-old man on Dec. 14, 2020 in an apartment on Stephenson Drive in Troy.
According to the Troy Police Department, the victim died from a fentanyl overdose, and police believe Carter was the individual who sold the victim the drug.
Carter remains incarcerated at the Miami County Jail. Preliminary hearings for Carter are set for Thursday.
