CASSTOWN — Recently members from the Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter were challenged to participate in the annual Chapter Corn Contest.

The contest rules were to bring in one ear of corn and earn a prize. Winners were presented with a T-shirt from the FFA Chapter. A winner is chosen based on the predicted yield of the corn and the grand prize winner was determined by the highest yield estimate, based on plant population per acre. Agricultural Education students in Plant and Animal Science classes took time to figure the predicted yield of corn ears as part of their continuing education of agronomy.

The overall winner was Kyle Wright, whose corn was predicted to yield 436.9 bushels to the acre with a 36,000 seed population per acre. His corn was a Ebberts Seeds product.

Second place was Jon Hart, whose corn was predicted to yield 353.4 bushels to the acre. His corn was a Golden Harvest product with a 34,000 seed population per acre.

Third place went to Grace Shively who presented an ear of corn that is predicted to produce 330.1 bushels per acre with a 34,000 seed population per acre. Hers was a DeKalb product.

Fourth place went to Logan Ward with an ear of corn predicted to yield 327.25 bushels to the acre with a 35,000 seed population per acre. His was an AgriGold product.

Fifth place went to Wyatt Maxson with a yield of 317.7 bushels to the acre with a seed population rate of 32,000 and was an Ebberts product.

The contest yielded an average of 338 bushels per acre, which was nearly 60 bushels to the acre higher than last year’s results. Additional participants included Cora Moore, Ella Hershberger, Garrett Hughes, Jackson Shane, and Wyatt Black. Special submissions were made by Mike Kirby and Elaine Kirby.
