OSP investigates fatal crash on I-75

BOTKINS — The Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) is investigating a three-vehicle commercial vehicle fatal crash that occurred Wednesday, Sept. 4, on Interstate 75 in Shelby County.

According to an OSP press release, the dispatch received a call the crash occurred at 3:08 p.m., on I-75 just south of the Botkins Road exit, in Dinsmore Township.

Iurie Chetrusca, 43, of Strongsville, succumbed to fatal injuries as a result of the crash, said the OSP press release.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2020 Freightliner commercial-tractor-trailer combination, operated by Jaquan Simon, 27, of Huber Heights, was traveling northbound on I-75 just south of the Botkins Road exit when he was struck from behind by a 2015 International commercial-tractor-trailer combination, operated by Jeffrey Sherrick, 65, of Lima. The 2015 International was then struck from behind by a 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer-combination, operated by Chetrusca.

The Freightliner came to rest along the right shoulder of the interstate. The International became disabled in the roadway and the trailer caught on fire. The cab and trailer of the Volvo also caught on fire.

Simon claimed no injuries as a result of the crash.

Sherrick was transported to Saint Rita’s Medical Center by ground ambulance with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation at this time by the Piqua Post.

OSP was assisted on scene by Botkins Police Department, as well as Botkins, Anna and Jackson Center Fire Departments, and the Shelby County Coroner’s Office, Wreckers Towing and Transport and Mantor Auto and Truck Repair.
