PIQUA — The Piqua City Schools Board of Education met in special session Monday, during which approval was given to award a contract to Wilcon Corporation for renovations at Piqua High School.

The total contract amount is $2,566,400. These renovations will take place this summer with a primary focus on the second floor academic classrooms, hallways, and restrooms.

Science classrooms will be upgraded to fit current safety measures and academic standards, and restrooms will receive ADA-compliant accessibility and improved water efficiency. Old flooring will be replaced, hallway lighting will be upgraded, and improvements will be made to student lockers.

Windows will also be replaced. According to treasurer Jeremie Hittle, the current windows of the over 40-year-old high school have broken seals that led to cracking of the block and mortar around the windows.

“These improvements were made possible by a permanent improvement levy that was graciously passed by our community in 2019, with the improvements of Piqua High School as the primary focus,” Hittle said.

Also during Monday’s special meeting, the board approved one resolution to reject all bids on the 2021 window replacements at Piqua Junior High, and to rebid the project.

Bids for the window replacement project were opened on Feb. 10, and seven bids were received.

The board also approved a resolution to reject all bids for planned masonry repair and restoration at the Piqua High School football stadium, and to rebid the project.

Bids for the project were opened on Feb. 4, and 10 bids were received.

“Our intent in the rebidding process is to clarify the specifications and requirements to ensure all bidders are giving the district quotes on the same information,” Hittle said.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25.
