Tippecanoe doubles teams, Spangler advance to D-II district tennis

TIPP CITY — It has been a big couple of weeks for the Tippecanoe girls tennis team.

A week ago, they entered the MVL tournament in second place and not only won the tournament, but kept their streak of MVL titles going.

On Tuesday, at Troy High School and Troy City Park, the Red Devils advanced both doubles teams and Eleanor Spangler in singles on to the D-II district tournament.

The semifinals and finals of sectionals were scheduled for Saturday morning at Troy City Park.

“The kids played well,” Tippecanoe coach Jack Romer said. “We did a good job today.”

Spangler, the third seed in singles, advanced by beating Brooke Metzger of Milton-Union 6-0, 6-1; Addy Hubbard of Chaminade-Julienne 6-1, 6-1 and Kayla Tosi of Kenton Ridge 6-2, 6-2.

She was scheduled to play second seed Sadie Pilson of Northwestern in the semifinals Saturday.

Tippecanoe’s Mary Waibel and Amelia Wiggleshaus are the second seeds in doubles.

They advanced by defeating Urbana 6-0, 6-1 and Northwestern 6-1, 6-1.

They were scheduled to play third seed Celeste Acuna and Evy Powers of Chaminade-Julienne in Saturday’s semifinals.

Tipp’s Eve Mccormick and Sydney LaBreck are the fourth seeds and advanced by defeating Milton-Union’s Aubrey Twentier and Penekioe Bobic 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 and Northwestern 6-3, 6-2.

They are scheduled to play the top seed from C-J, Paige Harsman and Olivia Parisi in Saturday’s semifinals.

Tipp freshman Jillian Schroeder was one match from advncing to district.

She defeated Violet Hess 6-0, 6-0 and rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Kenton Ridge’s Summer Massie to get to the go-to district match before losing to Pilson 6-0, 6-0.

“Jillian (Schroeder) really battled out there,” Romer said. “She came back from losing the first set to Kenton Ridge.”

Tippecanoe’s Bre Kovaleski picked up a win as well.

She defeated Brookville’s Ava Brandyberry 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Kenzie Stacey of Kenton Ridge 6-2, 6-3.

LEHMAN CATHOLIC

The Lehman Catholic girls tennis team’s season ended Tuesday.

In singles, fourth seed Charlotte Spaide lost to Kenton Ridge’s Stacey 6-1, 6-2; Brooklyn Fortkamp lost to Kaylie Jahna of Northwestern 6-0, 6-0 and Ashreal Alvarez lost to Eveline Schelle of Urbana 7-6 (3), 7-5.

In doubles, Elyza Westerheide and Kyla McGinnis advanced to the go-to district match before losing.

They defeated Bellefontaine 7-6 (5), 6-2 before losing to C-J 6-0, 6-0.

Dubling Cooper and Kali Pleasant lost to Bellefontaine 7-6 (5), 6-4.

MILTON-UNION

Milton-Union girls tennis also had its season end Tuesday.

In singles, Peyton Henderson lost to Francesca Gongora 3-6, 6-1, 6-0; along with Metzger losing to Spangler and Hess losing to Schroeder.

In doubles, Aubrey Twentier and Penekioe Bobic defeated Brookville 6-1, 6-1 before losing to McCormick and LaBreck 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Grace Leffew and Grace Ammon defeated Kenton Ridge 6-3, 6-2 before losing to C-J 6-0, 6-0.
