TMCS announces upcoming events

TIPP CITY – Tipp Monroe Community Services (TMCS) announced the following upcoming September and October events.

Taekwondo classes:

These classes for ages seven and older will be held at the TMCS building in Tipp City located at 3 E. Main St. starting on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

All classes run for twelve weeks for $155 for Tipp City residents and $157 for non-residents. Additional family members cost $80 for residents and $82 for non-residents. The cost of uniforms and belt rank fees are paid directly to the instructor, Patrick Jacobs, Black Belt Academy LLC.

The classes are family style, meaning adults and children may be in the same class.

Jacobs Black Belt Academy is a member of Global Traditional Martial Arts (GTMA) and has evolved traditional martial arts to meet students’ modern needs. Putting self-defense and practicality first, GTMA’s traditional martial arts build confidence and prepare students to handle real-life situations mentally and physically.

The following classes are available: Beginner Taekwondo for ages seven and up from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m; Intermediate Taekwondo for ages seven and up runs from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m; Advanced Taekwondo for ages eight and up and runs from 7:30 to 8:20 p.m; and Adult Taekwondo for ages 16 and older from 8:30 to 9:20 p.m.

Medicare information:

The ABCs and Ds of Medicare will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Tipp City Public Library. This is an introduction for new Medicare members. Learn how the different parts of Medicare work and how to ensure you have the coverage you need and avoid penalties.

LEGO Challenges:

Young builders are invited to build custom kits, complete LEGO challenges, learn LEGO terminology and build techniques, enhance critical thinking skills, and build narrative skills…but they won’t even notice with all the fun they’re having! The class runs beginning on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 6 to 7 p.m. for four consecutive Thursdays at LT Ball Intermediate School. The cost is $80 for residents and non-residents.

Brixilated Builders Academy (BBA) is a modular and adaptive enrichment curriculum that combines LEGO, mindfulness, and imaginative exploration to support the development of social and emotional skills (SEL), such as emotional regulation, teamwork, and empathy.

Guitar lessons

TMCS offers beginning 6-string acoustic guitar lessons for ages 14 to adult. The lessons start on Monday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and run for five consecutive Mondays at the Broadway Elementary School. The cost is $40 for Tipp City Residents and $45 for non-residents. The instructor, Jacob Dahlinghaus, will cover instrument care, finger placement, strumming, chord placement, sight-reading, open chords, fretting, picking, and hand coordination.

Elder law information

This free class will meet at the Tipp City Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. It will focus on teaching the rights and options regarding long-term care, nursing home care, at-home care, and Medicaid qualifications for coverage. Find out how to protect your assets and navigate the Medicaid application process, including using powers of attorney, guardianships, trusts, and spend-down techniques.

Attorney Joseph A. Downing will instruct the class. Downing is a local attorney who focuses on providing clients with short—and long-term legal needs. He has extensive experience in estate planning, probate, business, real estate, elder law, and Medicaid planning.

Recreational Basketball Registration

Registration for TMCS’s Recreational Basketball for grades 3-12 is now open and runs through Nov. 17. The cost for residents is $90 for the first child and $80 for each additional child. Residents and non-residents are welcome to participate. The fee for non-residents is $110 for each child. Late registration runs Nov. 18 – 24 and includes an additional $10 late fee. Games begin in late January.

There will be no player evaluations and no special requests except for siblings.

“The program brings in over 200 players each year,” said Kathy Taylor, director of TMCS, adding that the program is open to Tipp City and all surrounding communities.

All boy’s games are held in Tipp City. The girl’s teams will travel to other nearby locations.

Annual Halloween Parade

TMCS will hold its annual Halloween Parade and Costume Judging on Mon., Oct. 21. All parade participants will meet at 5:30 pm at Broadway Elementary School on the Dow Street side. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. Participants will march behind the Tippecanoe High School band to the Zion Lutheran Church parking lot for costume judging, photos, and games. Ranger Vic will join the parade and entertain the children at the church. The costume judging will be by age group.

Children of all ages are welcome to participate. In case of rain, the parade will be canceled, and the costume judging will take place at 6:30 in the Monroe Township basement located at 4 E Main St.

TMCS is a local nonprofit organization responsible for identifying and meeting the needs of Tipp City and Monroe Township residents. They provide recreational, educational, cultural, and social service programs. Visit their website tmcomservices.org for more information.
