CASSTOWN — Recently, members from the Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter were challenged to participate in the annual chapter corn contest.

The rules of the contest were to bring in one ear of corn and earn a prize. Winners were presented with an FFA T-shirt from the FFA Chapter.

A winner is chosen based on the predicted yield of the corn. The grand prize winner was determined by the highest yield estimate, based on plant population per acre. Agricultural education students in plant and animal science classes took time in class to figure the predicted yield of corn ears as part of their continuing education of agronomy.

The overall winner was Kyle Wright. His corn was predicted to yield 385 bushels to the acre with a 34,000 seed population per acre and was a ProHarvest Seeds product.

Second place was Kaci Manns. Her corn was predicted to yield 328 bushels to the acre with a 34,304 seed population per acre and was a DeKalb product.

Third place went to Jadyn Bair. His corn was predicted to produce 326 bushels to the acre with a 35,000 seed population per acre and was a Pioneer product.

Fourth place went to Garrett Hughes. His corn was predicted to yield 325 bushels to the acre with a 37,045 seed population per acre and was a Channel Seeds product.

Fifth place went to Wyatt Black. His corn was predicted to yield 296 bushels to the acre with a seed 37,045 seed population per acre and was a Channel Seeds product.

As a whole, the contest yielded an average of 277 bushels per acre. This is almost 20 bushels to the acre lower than last year’s results. Additional participants included Jon Hart, Hunter Barnes, Emma Hershberger, Cora Moore, Jenna Taylor, and Isaac Apple. Special submissions were made by local farmers Mike Kirby and Rob Hart.
