PIQUA — Andrew Slusher is a different golfer than he was several years ago.

And he showed that over the weekend, pulling away to a six-shot victory in the Piqua City Golf Championship played at Echo Hills Saturday and Piqua Country Club Sunday.

The former Covington High School standout, who plays for Ohio Northern University, had entered Sunday tied for the lead with Brian Deal after both shot one-under par 71s on Saturday.

But, Slusher followed a two-over par 38 on the front with an even-par 36 on the back to shoot a 74 Sunday and pull away.

“I really wasn’t sure (where he stood),” Slusher said. “I thought it would be good enough. I felt like it was solid.”

Slusher said he had to make a little adjustment on the greens from Echo Hills.

“Everything was really solid,” Slusher said. “My putting was a little bit off on the front nine, the greens are a lot faster here (at Piqua Country Club). I was just really solid on the back nine.”

He had one birdie, seven pars and bogey on the back nine to achieve a long-time goal.

“When I started playing in the Junior Club Championship (at Echo Hills), I always thought about it,” he said. “When I started playing in it a couple years ago, I felt like I could play with these guys.”

But, he took it to a different level this year.

“I think the difference is probably just maturity,” Slusher said. “Playing golf in college has helped me a lot. I will be a senior at Ohio Northern next year. I was playing good at Echo Hills last week and I felt pretty good coming into today.”

There was four-way tie for second.

Chris Francis came back from an opening 78 with the low round of the day Sunday at the PCC layout, carding a 73.

Also at 151 were Deal (71-80), Justin Weber (72-79) and Matt Maurer (74-77).

Seniors

Doug Borchers cruised to the Seniors title, with rounds of 74 and 81 for a 155 total and a 20-shot victory.

Craig Seitz finished second with round of 84 ad 91 for a 175 total and Tim Quellhorst took third with rounds of 84 and 93 for a 177 total.

Super Seniors

Mike Emerick pulled away Sunday to win the Super Seniors title by six shots.

Emerick had rounds of 75 and 90 for a 165 total.

Marty Jackson had rounds of 80 and 91 for a 171 total to finish second and Tim Davis had rounds of 78 and 103 for a 181 total to finish third.

First Flight

Ryan Pearson rallied from a two-shot deficit to record a one-stroke victory over Jeff Jennings.

Pearson had rounds of 76 and 85 for a 161 total, while Jennings had rounds of 74 and 88 for a 162 total to finish second.

Doug Harter finished third with rounds of 78 and 88 for a 166 total.

Second Flight

Creg Rietz shot rounds of 87 and 93 for a 180 total to win the second flight.

Rob Kiser shot 88 in the opening round, before no-carding Sunday.
