PIQUA — Volunteers at Eagles’ Wings Stable support therapeutic horseback activities for people with special needs, improving their development and quality of life. Their next volunteer orientation is at 9 a.m., on Jan. 8, 2022, at Eagles’ Wings Stable, 5730 N. Washington Road, Piqua.
Eagles’ Wings’ volunteers are enthusiastic about serving people with special needs. The majority of the pictures taken of volunteers show them smiling – they believe in what they are doing, and it shows on their faces. Their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment make it possible to serve people with special needs. Each week, 70 volunteers come to the arena and stable to work with horses at Eagles’ Wings Stable and support their students. They give with their whole hearts, and they make meaningful connections – they are operating at the intersection of joy and need.
Eagles’ Wings Stable volunteers are of all ages and experience levels. Some are earning service hours, some are looking to give back to others, and some are lifelong horse people who feel the calling to help people understand how the bond between a horse and a human can change a life.
Eagles’ Wings Stable trains all of their volunteers to do their jobs. Here are the opportunities to become a part of their team. All volunteers must be at least 14 years old:
• Barn Buddies: Each volunteer helps one day per week by cleaning two to three stalls. They provide fresh water for the horses and sweep the center aisle. This is typically a two-hour commitment per week.
• Arena Volunteers: Arena volunteers either lead a horse or walk beside the horse to support the rider. Class sessions run for eight weeks. This is a one-hour commitment per week for eight weeks.
• Other volunteer opportunities: Taking photos of our horses and riders and telling riders’ and volunteers’ stories through journals. This commitment can vary.
If you cannot commit to a regular schedule, Eagles’ Wings Stable is always looking for substitutes in all areas if you are interested in helping on an as-needed basis.
