Edison State hoop teams sweep Lorain CC

LORAIN — The Edison State Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams head into the Christmas break after sweeping Lorain Community College on Saturday.

MEN

Edison State improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the OCCAC with an 81-69 victory.

Edison led 37-31 lead at halftime and increased the margin by six points in the second half.

Ibrahima Athie had 23 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Jaylen Robinson added 21 points and four steals.

Jakob Reed had 20 points and five rebounds off the bench and Jordan Howard had seven points and five rebounds.

Avante Martin had four steals.

Edison State was 30 of 63 from the floor for 48 percent, including seven of 18 from 3-point range for 39 percent.

The Chargers converted 14 of 28 free throws for 50 percent.

Lorain made 24 of 58 shots for 41 percent, including seven of 21 from long range for 33 percent.

Lorain hit 14 of 22 free throws for 64 percent.

Edison won the battle of the boards 40-37 and had 19 turnovers to Lorain’s 22.

WOMEN

The Edison State women improved to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the OCCAC.

The Lady Chargers led 18-16, 39-32 and 67-41 at the quarter breaks.

Kailah Johnson had 22 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Allison Siefring had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and Whitney Staggs had 11 points, nine rebounds and six steals.

Nia Johnson had 11 points off the bench and Makayla Blount scored nine points.

Victoria Newland had eight points and seven rebounds and Trisa Porter scored six points.

Edison State was 37 of 87 from the floor for 43 percent, including four of 13 from 3-point range for 31 percent. The Chargers made 17 of 24 free throws for 71 percent.

Lorain was 24 of 57 from the floor for 42 percent, including one of three from long range for 33 percent.

Lorain made nine of 10 free throws for 90 percent.

Edison won the battle of the boards 51-33 and had 21 turnovers, while forcing 37 turnovers.
