Edison State men stun Hocking

NELSONVILLE — The Hocking men’s basketball team had only lost one game all year.

The Edison State men doubled that total to two Thursday night, stunning Hocking 74-73 in a Great Lakes Distict C semifinal.

The Chargers will now play at Lakeland Saturday, with the winner advancing to the national tournament.

Sekou Maiga and Ibrahima Athie both had double-doubles for the Chargers.

Maiga had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead a balanced attack.

Jordan Howard had 15 points and eight rebounds and Athie had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Jaylen Robinson added 10 points and seven rebounds, Shaeden Olden scored nine points and Mike Kennedy added seven points.

The Chargers rallied from a 36-34 halftime deficit, outscoring Hocking 40-37 in the second half.

Edison was 27 of 68 from the floor for 40 percent, including six of 15 from 3-point range for 40 percent. The Chargers made 14 of 17 free throws for 82 percent.

Hocking was 26 of 74 from the floor for 35 percent, including four of 22 from long range for 18 percent. The Hawks converted 17 of 21 free throws for 81 percent.

Edison won the battle of the boards 45-39, but had 16 turnovers to Hocking’s nine.

The Chargers are now 20-8 on the season.
