PIQUA — A Tuesday afternoon structure fire temporarily displaced two families and their pets.

Piqua Firefighters were called to a duplex in the 300 block of Gordon Street around 2:15 p.m. after a caller to Miami County 9-1-1 reported smoke and fire from an electric outlet in the upstairs unit.

Covington Fire Department was also dispatched on the call.

Piqua Power was contacted to turn electric power off to the two-story wood-frame structure and CenterPoint Energy to turn shut off gas. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and kept smoke damage to a minimum.

Five residents and four cats who occupied the second floor were displaced as well as a single occupant and three cats from the first floor. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist them.

Investigators from Piqua Fire Department are working to determine the cause of the fire.
