This is our first Covington column in two months, and I’m glad to be back and still writing for Miami Valley Today. A lack of news precluded me from writing in April, but we’re back with a lot going on during the next few weeks.
First, please be sure to stop by the Covington Christian Church Women’s Fellowship Salad Luncheon Drive-Through this Friday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or until everything is gone. Enter the drive-through from the alley off Pearl Street next to Covington Christian Church, and the church ladies and helpers will deliver two containers full of their more popular salads, including the signature hot chicken salad and delicious desserts, all for a donation, right to your car window. All meals will be prepackaged and ready for pickup, and unfortunately, they are not able to take special requests at this time.
Stop by the church office to pre-order and leave your donation by May 20 to guarantee you don’t miss out on all that goodness. Supplies will be limited, so if you don’t reserve your lunch, please come early. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 am until 1 pm. Questions may be directed to the Covington Christian Church at (937) 473-3443. The church is located at 115 N. Pearl St., which is quite a busy thoroughfare these days.
The Covington-Newberry Historical Society has been very busy this year reorganizing and getting the Historical Museum prepared to reopen. They have updated the museum and have redone many of the displays. The ‘grand re-opening will take place over Memorial Day weekend. Their hours that weekend will include: Saturday, May 29 from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, May 30 from 2-5 p.m., and Monday, May 31, from 3-5 p.m.
Beginning in June, the society will be open regular hours or by appointment. Those open hours include the first and third Sundays of a month from 2-5 p.m., as well as the second and fourth Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. Contact the Covington-Newberry Historical Society President Dick Rice at (937) 216-3477 for more information, or to schedule your tour. The C-N Historical Society meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the museum. New members are always welcome. Visit them on Facebook at “Covington Ohio Yesterday and Today” or “Covington-Newberry Historical Society.”
Lastly, the Covington Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 4234 Chicken Barbecue is thankfully back this year. It will take place on Memorial Day, May 31, from 11 a.m. until all is gone. You may eat inside the VFW or drive-through and pick up your meals. The one change this year, with the ongoing construction on High Street, is that the barbecue will take place in the VFW’s lower parking lot, which can easily be accessed from Main Street. This is currently another busy Covington roadway, so just be careful pulling in and out of the VFW driveway. All are welcome for the return of this great Memorial Day tradition.
