Day of Service set at the Youth Center

PIQUA — The Miami County YMCA-Richard E. Hunt Youth Center will be having a Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day Event on Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is for All Junior High and High school students from Piqua and the surrounding areas. It will be a great opportunity to meet new friends and to serve the community. They will help clean and refresh the YMCA. Lunch will be provided. The event is sponsored by the YMCA, Young Life, and Piqua area churches.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

TROY — City offices in Troy will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Refuse collection and curbside recycling will not be affected by the holiday. Troy City Council will next meet on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.

Kennedy to speak on historic Black churches

TROY — The Troy Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main St. in Troy. Featured speaker for the evening will be Patrick Kennedy, archivist for the Troy-Miami County Public Library Local History Library. Kennedy will speak on the topic of “Troy’s Historic Black Churches” in recognition of Black History Month in February. His presentation will be a general overview of the following churches:

• St. James African Methodist (now Community) Church, founded in 1837

• Zion Baptist Church, founded in 1866

• Richards Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1877

The meeting is free and open to the public.
