Local singer brings God’s message through music

TROY — For Jenah Shank, it’s always about the story.

Whether weaving through countless news articles she’s drafted over a long career in journalism, or within the lyrics she’s penned since childhood, Shank’s words can carry the listener through circumstances and testimonies that unfold with each line she writes, with every strum of her guitar.

These stories inevitably highlight the goodness of God.

Shank will share that message on Saturday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m., when she will provide the music and worship for First Place Recovery, a weekly recovery service at Troy First United Methodist Church, First Place Christian Center, 19 W. Franklin St.

“I’ve always loved sharing peoples’ stories in one way or another and using my words to express God’s faithfulness,” she said. “Sometimes, the words are about me, sometimes someone else.”

Often, they are straight-forward songs of worship and praise to God and, she says, “expressions of my love for Jesus and the realization of how much He loves me.”

Shank has recorded several songs over the past two decades. Proceeds from her music have helped send Native American youth to summer camp in New Mexico. She has also participated in numerous benefit efforts and has shared her songs at churches, coffee houses, youth events, juvenile centers, clubs, cafes and festivals across the country.

For the past several years, she has participated in suicide awareness events and vigils in remembrance of her brother who took his own life at the age of 23. She assists her husband, Ron, with Sunday morning truck top services by providing the music.

Recently, she released “No Greater Love” about a young man killed while serving his country. She has been working to link the song to various organizations that support veterans’ efforts and families of fallen officers to allow proceeds from downloads, streaming and direct sales to go towards supporting those causes.
