Miller’s 25 leads Bradford girls past Newton: Thursday sports roundup

PLEASANT HILL — The third quarter was the difference as the Bradford girls basketball team got a road Cross County Conference win at Newton Thursday night, 41-29.

Bradford improved to 14-7 overall and finished 8-4 in the CCC. Newton closed the regular season at 7-15.

The Railroaders led 7-5 after one quarter and 12-11 at halftime, before opening a 27-16 lead after three quarters with a 15-5 advantage.

“We showed a big improvement over the first game with Bradford,” Newton coach Ryan Fiely said. “We just didn’t shoot well enough to win.”

Austy Miller nearly matched Newton, scoring 25 points to lead Bradford.

Brooke Deeter and Camryn Gleason scored eight points each for Newton, Jaden Stine added five points and Katelyn Walters had 10-plus rebounds to go with her four points.

Bethel 62,

TC North 15

BRANDT — Bethel ‘s turnaround is officially complete, as the Bees posted a 62-15 victory over Tri-County North Thursday to clinch a winning record for the year — the first of coach Corey Steinke’s five-year tenure and longer.

Bethel improved to 13-9 overall with the win — guaranteeing a winning season, its first in years, regardless of what happens in the tournament — and finished 6-6 in Cross County Conference play.

Everyone got in the action Thursday, too. Kenna Gray led the way with 20 points, Nat Moorman scored 12 and Liv Reittinger added 11 as eight different Bees found their way into the scoring column.

Troy Christian 31

YELLOW SPRINGS — Yellow Springs’ Angie Smith, the Metro Buckeye Conference’s leading scorer, scored 28 points Thursday night, including the game-winning free throws late as the Bulldogs upset Troy Christian 33-31.

Yellow Springs improved to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in the MBC — and potentially played spoiler in the MBC race. Troy Christian fell to 17-3 overall and finished 10-2 in the MBC, putting the Eagles half a game behind 10-1 Legacy Christian. The Eagles now need the Knights to lose to Middletown Christian Friday night to get a share of the MBC title.

Troy Christian hosts Graham Saturday then finishes the regular season at Chaminade Julienne Monday.

Girls Win

MINSTER — The Troy bowling teams both picked up non-league victories Thursday at Community Lanes in Minster, with the boys defeating host Minster 2,24-2,047 and the girls getting a measure of payback with a win over Versailles, 2,233-1,958.

The girls (10-4) posted their highest score of the year and avenged an early-season loss to the Tigers. Kayleigh McMullen led the way with a 236-228—464, Kylie Schiml rolled 193-186—379, Adara Myers rolled 179-188—367, Jami Loy rolled 189-174—363 and Hope Shiltz rolled 166-154—320.

Jordan Fisher rolled 247-223—470 to lead the boys (9-5). Drew Snurr rolled 177-217—394, Brayden Ganger rolled 148-179—327, Adam Shiltz rolled 161-131—292, Tyler Stoltz added a 193 game and Nathan Hamilton added a 162.

Troy travels to Piqua Tuesday for a big Miami Valley League Miami Division matchup.

Butler Sweeps

Newton

VANDALIA — The Newton boys bowling team closed the regular season with a 5-10 record, falling to Butler 2,122-1,710.

The Newton girls, meanwhile, finished 6-7 with an 1,822-1,710 loss to the Aviators.
