CASSTOWN — The Miami East girls basketball defense was in a “zone”.

And with points at a premium Monday night against Anna, it took that kind of defense to get a 26-18 win over Anna and remain unbeaten on the season and improved to 17-0.

After making three field goals in the first quarter, the Rockets would not make another one until the final 30 seconds of the game, getting two late baskets as the Vikings defense smothered any offensive attempts.

East had trailed 8-4 after the opening quarter.

Miami East’s Logan Phillips had the only field goal for either team in the second quarter, hitting a 3-pointer to keep East within 9-7 at halftime.

Another three by Phillips put East up 10-9 in the third quarter, before Anna hit four straight free throws.

Maryn Gross scored the final three points of the quarter for East to make it 13-13 going to the fourth quarter.

East had an 11-0 run through the first six minutes of the fourth quarter.

It started with a Phillips jumper, followed by a Katie Paulus steal and layup.

Gross scored off an assist from McKayah Musselman to make it 19-13.

Paulus put the dagger in with a 3-pointer and a Camryn Francis basket made it 24-13.

Phillips led all scorers on the night with 10 points.
