Newton boys gets past Covington at Buccaneer Holiday Classic

COVINGTON — The Buccanerr Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament got shortened to one game each night due to Bradford withdrawing due to illness.

Newton defeated Covington 64-42 Tuesday and Covington will play Russia at 7:30 p.m. tonight to wrap up the tournament.

The Indians improved to 5-4 on the season and Covington dropped to 1-7.

Newton used a fast start, jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the early going.

Chandler Peters had eight points in the run and Harold Oburn added seven, burying a 3-pointer to make it 17-4.

Peters had 18 points in the first half, going 4-for-4 from long range as the Indians took a 36-20 lead.

Covington responded coming out of the locker room.

Owen Boehringer hit a 3-pointer and Cam Kirker and Britton Miller scored inside to get the Buccs within 36-27.

Covington was within 48-35 going to the fourth quarter before Newton pulled away.

Peters scored a game-high 29 points and Oburn had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Hudson Montgomery had eight points and five assists, Quinn Peters had seven points and four assists and Quentin Smith grabbedeight rebounds rebounds.

Kirker led Covington with 11 points and Miller added eight points.

Mic Barhorst scored seven points and Boehringer pulled down five rebounds.

Newton was 25-for-47 from the floor for 53 percent, hitting eight 3-pointers.

The Indians converted six of 11 free throws for 55 percent.

Covington was 18 of 44 from the floor for 41 percent and two of four from the line for 50 percent.

Newton won the battle of the boards 23-21 and had 15 turnovers to Covington’s 20.
