HUBER HEIGHTS — Jasiah Medley’s goal all along was to earn a berth in the Division I state track meet next week at Hilliard Darby Stadium.

Ttroy senior Zach Ray also had the same goal.

And the brutal conditions of cold and blowing rain at Wayne High School Friday night in the D-I regional meet weren’t going to stop them from accomplishing that.

“I don’t like running in this weather,” Medley said. “Not at all. But, I wasn’t worried about having to run in it.”

Medley finished second in the 100 in 10.99, with Moeller’s Brandon White winning in 10.78.

“I wasn’t sure where I was (after the start),” Medley said. “I made sure to look up at the scoreboard (at the finish) and see where I finished, so I knew I finished second.”

Piqua track and field coach Travis Nees was excited by Medley’s race.

“He (Jasiah Medley) had a strong start and a strong finish),” Nees said. “When you put yourselves in the company of Brandon Saine (former Piqua state champion who still holds the state record of 10.38) and make it to state, that puts you in pretty elite company.”

Ray finished fifth in the shot put with distance of 52-1 3-4 and had to wait until Sunday night to find out if he received one of the two at-large berths.

“We thought we would just be waiting until later Friday night,” Ray said.

But, the Amherst regional was postponed until Sunday.”

“Waiting until Sunday night was horrible,” Ray, who had the best fifth-place distance of the four regions, said. “I thought I was in pretty good position though.”

That Ray was able to record a PR Friday night in such horrible weather conditions was a story in itself.

“You just have to ignore that (the weather) and not let it bother you,” he said. “The throw (he got the PR on), when I let it go, I didn’t think it was very good at all. It didn’t feel right. Then I heard coach Gibbons yelling. I was like, wow was the good. I guess it was.”

Ray now gets to finish his athletic career at the state meet.

“I feel like now that I have made it, the goal is to get on the podium (top eight) and put myself among the best in the state.”

PIQUA D-II

At Alexander Stadium/Purk Field, Milton-Union senior Chris Miller and sophomores Blake Brumbaugh and Annie Smith all earned state berths at the D-II regional track and field meet at Alexander Stadium/Purk Field Saturday.

The D-II state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Pickerington North High School.

Miller was just happy to have a final shot at getting to state this year and took advantage with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run.

“I had a pretty good sophomore year,” Miller said. “It is just a privilege to be out here (after having last season postponed). That was tough, but I knew I had one more shot this year.”

Miller, who was clocked in 2:01.99, was fourth after the opening lap and held that position the rest of the race.

“I thought I was in pretty good position (after the opening lap),” Miller said. “I was still there coming off the curve and I knew that was a tough spot. I knew they were coming after me (at the finish). I just had to gut it out.”

Brumbaugh had qualified for state in the long jump Thursday and followed it up by doing the same in the 100-meter dash Saturday.

“The long jump, that is something that has taken me awhile,” Brumbaugh said. “The 100, I felt good coming in to today’s race. I felt strong and I ran a good race.”

He finished second in 11.16, behind Jake Amburgey of Waynesville who won in 10.95.

Now, Brumbaugh hopes his state meet debut will be a good one.

“I want to finish in the top four in the long jump,” he said. “I want to be in the top four in my heat in the 100.”

Miami East’s 1,600 relay of Clark Bennett, Jayden Hatcher, Kaden Weldy and Cameron Richter finished second in 3:31.83 to advance to state. Van Wert won the race in 3:27.35.

Miami East pole vaulter A.J. Ary finished fifth in the pole vault Thursday, but received an at-large berth to qualify for state. He cleared 13-0.

On the girls side, Smith said state wasn’t really a goal for her at the beginning of the year in the 100 hurdles.

“To be honest, I just wanted to have a good season and do my best,” she said.

She went beyond that Saturday, taking third in 16.24.

After the race, Smith waited for her name to come up on the board, not because she didn’t know where she finished.

“I wanted to see what my time was,” she said. “It is a school record. I looked when I cross the finish line to see where I finished. I had the fourth fastest time Thursday (in prelims), so I wanted to be in the top four.”

And her goals for state won’t change any.

“I just want to go over there and run by best,” she said.

TROY D-III

Newton and Lehman Catholic both advanced athletes on to the next week’s state meet at Westerville North High School at the Troy D-III meet Friday night.

Newton’s Dawson Hildebrand, who had qualified in the discus Wednesday, won the shot put with a distance of 57-3 to advance in that event as well.

He will be joined at state by teammate Lane Kesling, who finished third in the 400, 51.27.

On the girls side, Lehman had a big night, finishing third as a team with 49 points with Kiersten Franklin and Lindsey Magoteaux advancing in four events.

Franklin won the 100, 12.81; took third in the 200, 26.20, finished fourth in the 400, 59.96 and teamed with Magoteaux, Ella Monnin and Katie McFarland for fourth in the 800 relay, 1:48.22.

Magoteaux teamed with Ella Black, Monnin and McFarland to win the 400 relay, 50.60 and took second in the 100, 12.82 and fourth in the 200, 27.13.

Newton pole vaulter Rylie Resides advanced to state, clearing 10-4 to finish fourth.
