Troy girls soccer gets past Fairborn 2-1

TROY — The Troy girls soccer team had dominated Wednesday’s game with Fairborn everywhere but on the scoreboard.

But, it took a perfect kick from Kendra Kovacs and Kara Steinke’s “prayer” being answered for the Lady Trojans to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Skyhawks and improve to 5-3-0 overall and 4-0 in the MVL standings.

Fairborn dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the MVL.

Troy outshot Fairborn 25-1, but the game was still tied 1-1 when Steinke sent a ball towards the goal from 25 yards out with 7:46 remaining.

The shot went off the goalie’s hands and into the goal for what would be the winning score.

“Really, it was just a prayer,” Steinke said with a laugh. “I couldn’t believe it (when it went in).”

Troy coach Michael Rasay said it was the law of averages.

“You know, we had a lot of chances tonight and the goalie made some stops you wouldn’t expect,” he said. “On that one, we were able to score.”

The game had begun with Fairborn getting a quick goal when Emily Baumgardner scored on an assist from Erin Thomas.

“That was probably the only shot they had all night and it goes in,” Rasay said. “I don’t think our goalie (Jovie Studebaker) touched the ball the rest of the night.”

Troy was still trailing 1-0 at halftime.

“The first have was a struggle,” Kovacs said. “We came out fired up in the second half.”

And got the first break they needed when Kovacs was awarded a direct kick from just outside the box.

She buried the shot in the left corner of the net with 35:03 remaining in the game to tie it 1-1.

“That is something we practice all the time,” Kovacs said. “I just enjoy being able to help out my team in that way.”

Rasay was not surprised.

“That is right in Kendra’s (Kovacs) sweet spot,” he said. “I knew if she got the ball on frame, she would make the shot.”

While, Troy had a number of chances from close range after that, it led to Steinke’s prayer being answered and another MVL win.

Troy will be back in action Monday, hosting Miamisburg.
