TIPP CITY — The Tipp City American Legion Post No. 586 presented donations to five area charities on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Every year the Tipp City American Legion Post 586 makes donations to local charities that provide services to veterans, individuals and families in the area, along with charitable programs sponsored by the American Legion.

This year members selected the American Legion Gifts for Yanks Program that provides services, equipment and other amenities needed by veterans in VA hospitals, according to member Harlan Purves. The Miami County Hospice was selected, because of the comfort and support they provide to local individuals and families in the most trying of times when comfort and understanding are critical, Purves said. He said they also selected the USO of Dayton for a donation. Services provided by the USO organization benefit active military members and veterans as they travel through the area. Food, entertainment and an area to rest and relax are provided at the Dayton International Airport for traveling service members. The Tipp-Troy Salvation Army also received a donation this year for their aid to local families in need, Purves said.

“The Salvation Army provides essentials to help families that have fallen on hard times and are in need of support,” Purves said.

This is the sixth year the post is sponsoring scholarships for veteran member’s sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Purves said.

“These scholarships will help them to continue their education and become productive members of our communities,” he said.
