PIQUA — Two of the Piqua football team’s top receivers over the past two undefeated regular seasons have made their college choices.
And Giovannia Barron and Cory Miller will both be headed to the same school — Wittenberg University.
Miller, the son of Don and Cathy Miller and Barron, the son of Frank and Stacy Evans — made their decisions official Tuesday in the Piqua High School commons.
“It is an exciting day,” Miller said. “I have my family here. There was a time I didn’t think I was going to go to college — or play football in college. My teammates are here. This is a good day.”
Barron said Wittenberg was an easy choice.
“They have a new staff,” he said. “It is a strong program. I think it is a lot like Piqua, so I am looking forward to it.”
Piqua football coach Bill Nees said it is a tremendous opportunity for both players.
“I think they both have a lot of untapped potential,” Nees said. “They are going to an outstanding program in Wittenberg and I can’t wait to see what they do there. They have both made tremendous progress since their sophomore seasons.”
Over the last two seasons, Piqua has gone 20-2, including 16 straight wins in the regular season.
After catching 11 passes for 108 yards as a junior, Miller became quarterback Brady Ouhl’s favorite target this season, catching 38 passes for 424 yards and three touchdowns.
“For sure, I feel like my best football is still in front of me,” Miller said. “I am excited about the opportunity to play at the college level.”
Barron also had a breakout season this year, becoming a home run threat.
He caught nine passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns — and led the Indians with 20.8 yards per reception.
“I am looking forward to the challenge (at the next level),” Barron said. “I will have to work my way up. I think I cam improve in every area of the game.”
And they will get to do it on the same team.
“Gio (Giovanni Barron) is a like a brother to me,” Miller said. “It is going be great having someone I know on the team and experience college with.”
And continuing to build on the breakout seasons they had in their senior seasons at Piqua.
