COLUMBUS — Miami East had a great first day of the Division III State Tournament at the Jerome Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University in Columbus on Friday as three Vikings won their opening matches to advance to the championship quarterfinals.

At 113 pounds, returning state runner-up Cooper Shore advanced with a 1:24 pin of Jackson-Milton’s Owen McDevitt. Next in the championship quarterfinal, Shore faces Trevor Wilcox of Ostego, who placed sixth a year ago at 106 pounds.

Max Shore, who is on a quest to win his second state title after finishing first last year at 120 pounds, took little time in disposing of Liberty Center’s Jackson Bartels in 22 seconds. Shore, who remains unbeaten at 26-0, takes on Gabe Hanson (47-4) of North Union in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.

David Davis, who placed 5th last year at 145 pounds, also advanced to the championship quarterfinals at 157 pounds with a win. The Vikings senior pinned Brendan Sheehan of Newark Catholic in 3:28 and will face Connor Smith (46-1) of Gibsonburg, who finished fourth last year at 152 pounds.

The final Viking wrestler to compete on the opening day at state was sophomore Layton Hughes at 138 pounds. Hughes dropped his first bout by pin to Andrew Seas (40-6) of Mapleton and then faced Brock Wygle of Utica where he fell via pin in 2:40. Hughes ends his sophomore campaign with a 28-12 record.
