TROY — Maynard and Alfrieda Francis will be celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary on April 3. Maynard, 95, was born in Casstown, and Alrieda, 93, was born in Troy. The couple met while square-dancing and have been happily married since 1948.

They have spent nearly their entire marriage in Troy where they fixed up apartment buildings and houses to rent creating a nest egg for retirement.

Together, they have four daughters and now seven great-great-grandchildren.

“In between, it’s too many to count,” said Alfrieda.

Each have kept busy since retiring, which they believe has helped their relationship. Maynard has spent the last 20 years glassblowing, and his creations fill their house and other people’s houses all over the country. Alfrieda spends her time gardening, and she still cooks and cleans.

“Religion, hard work, honesty, and give-and-take” are the keys to a successful marriage, said Alfrieda.

“A lot of give,” said Maynard.
