Troy girls outlast Tippecanoe in overtime

TROY — It wasn’t pretty, but in the end the Troy girls basketball team was able to escape with a 50-48 victory over Tippecanoe in overtime Saturday.

The Trojans improved to 13-3 overall and 13-7 in the MVL Miami Division, maintaining a share of the lead with Butler.

Tippecanoe dropped to 9-8 overall and 8-6 in the MVL.

Troy never trailed in the extra period.

Amyammah Tucker hit one of two free throws and Macie Taylor added two baskets as Troy took a 48-45 lead.

Tipp’s Madison Moran drilled a 3-pointer with 1:10 to go to tie the game 48-48.

With 40 seconds to go, Jovie Studebaker scored what would be the winning points to give Troy a 50-48 lead.

With 10 seconds to go, Troy had a chance to put the game away but missed two free throws.

Laney Cleckner grabbed the rebound for Tipp, but the Red Devils final shot was off the mark and Macie Taylor grabbed the rebound for Troy as the final buzzer sounded.

Tipp had gotten off to a fast start in the opening quarter as Makenzie Chinn hit two 3-pointers and Ashley Aselage and Moran had one each to give Tipp a 12-7 lead.

But, Troy would score the final six points of the quarter and eight in a row to go up 15-12 early in the second quarter.

Taylor had the final basket of the first quarter and completed the run early in the second quarter.

Tipp battled back and a basket by Moran and 3-pointer by Chin gave Tipp a 25-22 halftime lead.

The Red Devils led by seven at 36-29 late in the third quarter, before Troy rallied.

Kiyah Baker had a putback and Makenzee Maschino hit two free throws to close the deficit to 36-33 heading to the fourth quarter.

Taylor had a basket to start the fourth quarter and it was a tight battle the rest of the way.

Troy pulled even on a putback by Taylor to make it 39-39 with 4:03 going to the quarter.

Brynn Siler and Tucker hit two free throws each to put Troy up 43-39 with 2:20 t0 play.

But Chinn hit a jumper and stole the ball on a Troy inbounds an raced down for the tying basket to make it 43-43 with 1:25 to go.

Tipp had the ball for the last 58 seconds, but did not get off a shot.

After several near turnovers, the Troy defense knocked the ball into the backcourt and by the time Tipp tracked it down the clock had run out, forcing the overtime.

Taylor led Troy with 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Siler added eight points, two blocked shots and five rebounds.

Tucker scored seven points and had three steals and Baker scored six points.

Morgan Kaiser pulled down five rebounds.

Chinn led Tipp with 17 points.

Moran had 10 and Olivia Spiller added nine points.

Aselage pulled down 10 rebounds.

Troy was 17 of 44 from the floor for 39 percent and 15 of 23 from the line for 65 percent.

Tipp was 19 of 48 from the floor for 40 percent and four of nine from the line for 44 percent.

Troy won the battle of the boards 28-23, but had 11 turnovers to Tippecanoe’s 10.
