Troy wrestlers split tri-match on Senior Night

TROY — The Troy wrestling team was able to celebrate Senior Night with a split of a tri-match with Miamisburg and Stebbins.

And seniors Joe and Gabe Cusick both wins on the night.

Joe went 2-0 and Gabe 1-1 as Troy bounced back from a 66-9 loss to Miamisburg with a 42-34 win over Stebbins.

“You never want anyone to go 0-2 on Senior Night,” Troy coach Doug Curnes said. “So, that made it special. I am happy because we have such a young team with only two seniors. Gabe and Joe have been grinding all year as seniors and getting better and the whole team has been grinding.”

The Stebbins match began at 120 pounds.

After Stebbins started with a forfeit win, Lane Obaugh (126), Nathan Brewster (138) and Nathan Wyatt (144) all recorded wins by pins.

“That was a key to us winning,” Curnes said. “Lane’s win gave us momentum. If not for that, those other matches could have went a different way.”

With Troy leading 18-16, Gabe Cusicck sealed the win for Troy with a pin in 3:40.

That and forfeit wins by Danny Murray (165), Joe Cusck (175) and Kiernan Schnur (190) gave Troy a 42-16 lead, before Stebbins picked two pins and a forfeit to close the match.

“That makes the Senior Night special,” Curnes said. “But, I told Gave, the effort he gave to get off his back against Miamisburg was special, even if he didn’t get a win against Stebbins.”

The Miamisburg match was a tough one of the Trojans.

Obaugh rallied from a deficit in the third period to win 6-5 on a penalty point in the final 10 seconds.

“The story there was Lane (Obaugh) missed last week with illnees and was in and out of the room this week,” Curnes said. “So, to gut that out despite not having is normal conditioning, was extra special.”

Joe Cusick got a win by pin.

“Hopefully, we can build on this momentum and take it into the MVL next week,” Curnes said.

First, Troy and Tippecanoe will visit Piqua Saturday for a tri-match that begins at 10 a.m.
